Why I Love Maggie's

I was approached back in 2007 to see if I could spare some time to assist with the project management of the construction of our temporary centre in the car park of Tuen Mun Hospital and provide a temporary mentoring/supervisory role to our initial cancer caring specialists. At the time, close friends overseas were battling their own cancer diagnoses and I felt I wasn’t much support living so far away in Hong Kong. I however immediately recognised the benefits of a Centre, a haven to regain composure, to find solace and advice. I could volunteer and help others in my chosen country.

During my visits to our Centres here and in the UK I witnessed the psycho-social services and community of support. What makes Maggie’s so special is the community that rallies around: the supportive oncology doctors working at Tuen Mun Hospital and encouraging what complementary services we can offer; the caring, informative nurses; the clinical psychologists trained to assist; the familiar friendly faces offering you a cup of tea when you walk in. The people are at the heart at Maggie’s but the environment is extraordinarily special too. Frank Gehry’s cathedral like roof, the windows that frame nature and the terraces overlooking the beautiful ponds and gardens help to ground oneself, they evoke both awe and serenity. Our environments influence our mood and in turn that affects our ability to cope, our resilience. I hope that my involvement in the capacity building of Maggie’s Hong Kong will enable a strong future and the expansion of these innovations in holistic cancer care.
